One of the easiest things to do is to brew a pot of black coffee before the storm hits. It will keep for a few days in a cooler and it's easy to re-heat on a camping stove or grill once it's save to venture outside. In a pinch, you can also drink the coffee cool or cold. Since it's still hot here and we lose air conditioning along with the power during and after a hurricane, cold or iced coffee is a treat and it keeps me from getting headaches.
The other thing I do to prepare for a storm, or any weather disaster for that matter, is to stock up on homemade mixes and convenience foods. Pancake mix is good to have on hand for cooking up a simple breakfast over a fire or on the grill. Another favorite is instant potato soup mix. It doesn't take much to heat a small pot of water and a cup of soup makes a nice addition to those peanut butter sandwiches.
Whether you're preparing for a storm, or just making it through another busy week, take a look at these homemade convenience food recipes and give a few of them a try.
