Fun Forth of July Desserts And Freezing Blueberries

Summer is in full swing and we'll be traveling to Germany to visit with family for a few weeks. I'll share pictures and stories with you in the next newsletter. First though, we'll be celebrating Independence Day. Do you have anything fun planned for the 4th of July?

I dug through the archives and came across some fun 4th of July dessert recipes that I want to share with you today.

There's a fun flag cake decorated with blueberries and raspberries (or strawberries). It's quick, easy, delicious, and always well received. You can make the sheet cake from scratch, or go out and buy one if you're running short on time.

You'll also find two fun snack recipes. One is for fruit kebabs, the other is for Pretzel sparklers. Both of these are a big hit with the kids around here.

During the summer it's easy to find fresh blueberries for your favorite cakes, pies and dessert recipes. The rest of the year I use frozen ones. Blueberries freeze really well and it's easy to freeze them at home. If you find yourself with an abundance of berries from your garden, a kind neighbor, or a deal at the store that's too good to pass up, here's how to freeze them:

If you're looking for a great deal on blueberries, see if you have a blueberry farm in your area. Many will allow you to pick your own berries and get a great deal on them. If you want to be even more frugal, see if the owner will make you an even better price if you pick a bucket for them and one for yourself. I've gotten blueberries for next to nothing this way.

Last but not least, let's talk about pies. With all these fresh berries around, now is a great time to bake up a fresh batch. What makes or breaks a pie is the crust. Here's what you need to know about making the perfect pie crust:
