[HBHW News] Crafting, Homemade Chips, Soured Milk and Staying Organized

Editorial

Hello ,

Hi there and welcome to the next edition of the HBHW newsletter. We've been staying busy around here with school meetings, after school activities and some last minute shopping for things that were on teachers individual supply and wish lists. There's also been some deep cleaning to catch up on after a somewhat lazy summer and then there's fall planting to do in the garden.

I have been able to do a little crafting, but sadly not much sewing. I don't have a table set up for sewing and cutting fabric. I use my kitchen table and have to work around meal times. Somehow I just wasn't able to squeeze some sewing in this past week. I did buy a little more fabric this weekend though and am itching to practice more. I'll be sure to share some pictures once I do. I did get some knitting and spinning in. Let me know if you'd like me to share some of that on the blog. I'd be happy to do so.

Last but not least, let's get into this week's issue of the newsletter. I have a "I'm looking for" request for pineapple cake made with graham crackers. I don't think I have the recipe she's looking for, but I do have one for a delicious cheesecake pie with pineapples in a graham cracker crust to share. I hope one of you has the recipe she's looking for. Please take a look and don't forget to give my pie recipe a try.

Speaking of quick and easy recipe... I have one for baked tortilla chips to share today. I've been making homemade salsa with our garden tomatoes and jalepenos and these chips are perfect with it.

Of course there's also an article (that will help you stay organized) and frugal tip along with some other fun stuff.

Enjoy!

I'm Looking For

I lost a recipe for the cake that was made with crushed graham cracker crumbs instead of flour and it had a pineapple topping. It may have been called Pineapple graham cracker cake or something along those lines.

Featured Recipe of the Week

Homemade Baked Tortilla Chips

  • 8 small (6 inch) corn tortillas
  • olive oil cooking spray
  • sea salt to taste

Make sure the oven racks are in the middle of the oven. Turn oven on to 375 degrees and allow to preheat.
Lay tortillas out on a work surface and cut into quarters.

Spray the tortillas lightly with the cooking oil, flip and spray the other side.
Get out a couple large baking sheets or cookie sheets and lay the tortillas out on the sheets, avoiding any over-lapping.

Bake in preheated oven for about 15 minutes, turning the tortilla pieces over with a tongs about half way through. They should become golden brown and crispy as they bake and will even crisp up more after you remove them from the oven.

Remove and immediately sprinkle with the sea salt or any other flavorings you like while the chips are still warm.

You're welcome to share the recipe on Pinterest, Facebook etc. I'm also sharing a lot of recipes on the HBHW Facebook page. Click on through to check it out. As always, likes, comments and shares are much appreciated. :)

How To “Make” Buttermilk From Sweet Milk

I was getting ready to make a batch of biscuits last night to go with the Chicken Chili I had cooking in the slow cooker. I thought I still had some buttermilk leftover from making cornbread and buttermilk pancakes this past weekend, but apparently it was all gone.

Instead I grabbed a little regular milk from the fridge and a bottle of lemon juice. I still had plenty on hand after making palm fruit jelly (which I still need to blog about). It’s quick & easy and works just as well as regular buttermilk from the store.  It is also referred to as “soured milk”, which is different from milk that has gone sour or spoiled.

    How to make soured milk

Take a cup of fresh milk. I prefer to use whole milk or 2% for cooking and baking, but it should work with lower fat or even skim milk as well. Add 1 tablespoon of either lemon juice or white vinegar and stir to mix it in well. Let it sit on the counter for a few minutes and use like buttermilk.

When making biscuits, I start with the milk and lemon juice and leave it sitting out on the counter while I’m getting my flour and shortening out. By the time I have the shortening worked into the flour and need the buttermilk, it is ready to use.

This also works well in buttermilk pancakes or waffles. And try making your cornbread with buttermilk instead of regular milk. The flavor is amazing.

This little tip will save you quite a bit throughout the year. Particularly if you don’t often use buttermilk and end up pouring over half the carton out because it goes bad before you use it all up.

The Family Command Center – One Spot To Keep You Organized

I originally wrote this article for the February issue of the Homemaker’s Hutch digital magazine but wanted to share it with you here as well.

As your family grows and the kids get older, it starts to get harder and harder to keep track of everything that’s going on. There are school functions, doctor’s appointments, play dates, after-school activities, PTA meetings, book clubs, library book due dates and business trips to keep track of. Then there are phone messages and the likes.

It can be hard to keep track of everything including the everyday stuff like meal plans, shopping lists, bills to pay, homework and the likes. The solution to tame the chaos? A Family Command Center.

The Family Command Center is simply a spot to keep you (and the rest of your family) organized. It’s where you want to keep all essential information to keep things running smoothly.

How Much Room Do You Need

Your command center can take as much or as little room as you can afford. It could be as simple as a drawer in the kitchen and a dry erase board on the fridge, or it can take over a corner of your living room or home office. Like many things it will grow to fill the space you allot to it. At the very least you want a binder or box to keep paperwork in and a notepad or dry erase board. A calendar will come in handy too.

    Finding A Central Location

One of the first things you want to determine is where to put your command center. You want a central location that everyone in the household frequents already. This will ensure that important documents and messages are dropped off and that everyone sees any messages on your calendar or message board several times a day.

Our top spots for this are the kitchen and the living room. A small table or desk in the entry way may also work. In the end, the most crucial part is to pick a spot and get everyone into the habit of using it.

What To Keep In Your Family Command Center

We already touched on this but some of the things you want in your command center are as follows...

    Final Thought

That's it from me for this week. I have a little more work to do both on the Hillbilly Housewife blog and the next issue of the Homemaker's Hutch magazine. Our next issue will be all about fall and I'm excited. Even though it's still hot here, I am ready for all things fall. How about you?
