Editorial

Hello ,

Hi there and welcome to the next edition of the HBHW newsletter. I'm so sorry I didn't get a new newsletter out to you last week. I thought I was just super tired last Wednesday, but it turns out I was getting sick. I must have picked up some sort of bug on the plane or right after getting home. I ended up in bed with a fever for the rest of the week. Thankfully I'm feeling much better and getting some work done.

I shared a new article on the blog yesterday. It's also featured in today's newsletter. It's a bit of a different, more casual take on meal planning that worked out really well when I was visiting with my mom and dad. I also share a recipe my sister cooked up. It's some yummy stuffed zucchini. Our zucchini plants couldn't make it through the heat, but hopefully you're still able to harvest some or get a great deal at the grocery store.

I'm about to head out to meet my friend Amber from the Coastal Homestead. She's teaching me how to make home-brewed Kombucha. I'm looking forward to learning more and brewing my own. I'll let you know how that goes.

Enjoy!

Featured Recipe of the Week

Stuffed Zucchini

  • 2 medium zucchini
  • 1/2 pound sausage or ground beef*
  • 1/4 cup onion (chopped)
  • 1/4 tsp. Basil
  • 1 cup grated cheese

Slice zucchini in half lengthwise and scoop out the middle with a spoon.(save the inside) Brown onion and sausage and drain. Mix in the zucchini that you saved along with the basil and place the mixture back into the zucchini.

Bake at 375 degrees for about 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and cover with your favorite cheese. Place back into the oven for 5 minutes to melt the cheese.

* If you’re using ground beef, season it with salt and pepper to taste while it’s cooking. You can also add a little cayenne pepper for some heat.

You're welcome to share the recipe on Pinterest, Facebook etc. I'm also sharing a lot of recipes on the HBHW Facebook page. Click on through to check it out. As always, likes, comments and shares are much appreciated. :)

Removing Blueberry Stains From Clothing and Dish Towels

With blueberry season in full swing around here, we’re busy harvesting and “putting up” those delicious berries. Unfortunately there’s always some of the purple juice that gets on clothing or the rags I’m using while making pies, jelly and jam.

    Getting Blueberry Stains Out

Start by rinsing the shirt, apron, towel or whatever piece of clothing you’ve gotten blueberry stains on with plenty of cool water. The sooner you can do this the better.

Next, rub some white vinegar into the stain. A toothbrush works well for this or just use your fingers and get it in there.

While you’re doing that, put on a big kettle and bring some water to a boil. Pour it over the vinegar soaked stain until it’s gone.

Now that blueberry stains aren’t an issue any longer, try some new recipes from the Hillbilly Housewife’s Blueberry Cookbook.

    Planning Meals Day By Day

I just got back from a short trip to Germany. I love how traveling to a different country gives me a fresh perspective on how I’m doing things here in the States.

Today I want to talk to you about meal planning and grocery shopping. If you’ve been reading the blog for a while, you know that I’m a big fan of meal planning. I like to sit down on Sunday night and plan out our meals for the week. Monday is my grocery shopping day, and I try to buy everything I’ll need in that one trip. It’s been a big time saver and has helped me manage how much I’m spending on groceries in a given week.

With that said, I got a chance to do things a little differently while I was in Germany last week and there were some things I liked about more frequent, quick shopping tips. Of course there were some pitfalls and I’ll be sure to point those out as well.

Sometime during the day we would decide what we wanted for dinner. With plenty of veggies and salads from the garden and a well stocked pantry, it was usually a matter of picking up some sort of meat and maybe a fresh loaf of bread. Since we were out and about most days, it was easy to pop into the grocery store to pick up 2 or 3 things on the way home.

Since we often didn’t know who would join us for dinner and when we’d end up going out to eat, it worked out really well. This could also be perfect during summer break when you’re not in your usual routine and traveling some days. Or when you have company over and play things a little more by ear than usual.

Let’s talk about what it takes to make this spontaneous day-to-day cooking work.

    Final Thought

That's it from me for this week. I'm glad to be back home and feeling better. It's nice to get into a bit of a routine and to work in the garden. We still have a fair amount of tomatoes and the Okra is growing nicely. What's growing in your garden?
