[HBHW] Saving with Homemade Convenience Foods

Published: Mon, 05/18/15

Hello ,

Buying groceries can take quite a chunk out of your family budget, but there's an easy way to spend a lot less - homemade convenience foods. They give you the best of both worlds...saving you time and money.

We've gotten so used to buying baking mixes, canned soup, specialty coffee drink powder, and entire meals or side dishes in a box (think mac and cheese). Yes, they are convenient. Everything is measured out and instructions on how to prepare them are on the box. But you pay for that convenience.

Let me give you a quick example. We love oatmeal for breakfast. It's quick and easy and I used to buy the little packs of oatmeal. When you can get them on sale, you usually pay around 25 cents per packet.  By switching to buying pick tubs of dry oatmeal and adding your own sugar and cinnamon (or other flavorings), you can make that same bowl of oatmeal for about 2 cents.

Here's a blog post I wrote a while back about making your own instant oatmeal:

Of course oatmeal isn't the only thing you can save on. I have quite a few other homemade convenience food recipes here:

Browse through the recipes and find a few things you can start making at home from scratch. It's no nearly as much work as you may think and the results are well worth it. It'll taste better and is cheaper than the store-bought stuff.

Last but not least I would like to invite you to take a look at my Homemade Convenience Food Ebook. In it you will learn anything from what's worth making at  home and what isn't, how to make busy mornings a breeze convenient breakfast foods, lunches, dinners, snack ideas and more.  Of course you'll also find plenty of convenience food recipes (over 200 of them). There are even recipes for homemade cleaners as well as bath and body products.
