Editorial

Hello

Hi there and welcome to the next edition of the HBHW newsletter. We had the hardest time getting up for school on Monday. Winter break was wonderful, but like any longer stretch of time off, we all turn into night owls. Thankfully we are back on track and getting moving in the morning is getting easier.

I'm doing well with my goals for the New Year so far, including adding more recipes and tips for you here on the Hillbilly Housewife website - as you'll see in today's issue. My little sock yarn blanket that I shared in yesterday's New Year's Resolution post is growing nicely. I'll share an update picture with you in a couple of weeks.

I'd also like to invite you to join myself and Tracy Roberts from MomsInABlog.com over at www.HomemakersHutch.com.  We just wrapped up the January issue of our digital magazine and it's my favorite one yet. If you need a little inspiration along with some great frugal tips and recipes, you don't want to miss it.

In this issue I have a great tip for you on how to bake bacon in the oven, a frugal tip on using potatoes and a great article full of tips to keep you warm this winter. It's getting very cold here over the next few days, so these tips will come in handy.

Enjoy!

Featured Recipe of the Week

Cooking Bacon In The Oven

We’ve been baking bacon every weekend and it turns our perfect ever time. Just watch it towards the end so the bacon doesn't get too dark.

  • 1 pack of bacon
  • aluminum foil

Preheat your oven to 400F.
Line 2 cookie sheets with aluminum foil.
Lay the bacon slices on the cookie sheets. They can touch on the sides, but you don't want them to overlap.
Bake for 15 to 20 minutes depending on the thickness of the bacon and how crispy you like it.
Pour the bacon grease in a glass jar and save it in the fridge for cooking eggs and the likes later.
Move the bacon slices to a plate. If you like you can set them on paper towels first to soak up some of the grease.

    Microwaving Potatoes For Frugal Meals

Let’s talk about potatoes today. They are a great frugal staple. You can buy them inexpensively, or if you’re so inclined you can also easily grow them in your yard. I prefer to buy them and use my limited gardening space to grow more expensive foods (herbs, lettuce, tomatoes etc.).

I always have a bag of potatoes sitting in the pantry. I often pull them out to add some bulk to meals. My favorite way to add last minute potatoes to any meal is to microwave them.

Get out a microwave-safe plate. Wash your potatoes and lay them on the plate. Grab a fork and poke a few holes in each potato.

Microwave them for 5 minutes on high. Rotate the potatoes and cook for another 5 minutes or so and check for doneness. Cook them longer if needed. This will depend on the size of your potatoes.

Serve them with a little butter as a “baked” potato to go along with the rest of your meal. Or take some leftover meat and veggies, chop it all up and top your cooked potato with it along with a little cheese for a complete meal.

I also like to chop up the cooked potatoes and use them along with some leftovers to make quick and filling burritos. Or use them at breakfast time along with some eggs in a breakfast burrito.

It’s quick, easy and makes some great frugal meals.

    Extra Tip:

Once your potatoes are done, the inside of your microwave will be full of steam. Grab a rag and give the inside a good wipe. Any splatters from previously heated food will come right off.

Winter Foods That Will Help Warm Your Body And Spirit

What you eat (and drink for that matter) can make a big difference in how warm your body is. There are certain winter foods  that will help warm up your body (and your spirit). There are also certain foods you should stay away from during these chili months. Let’s talk about what you should and shouldn’t eat in the winter.

    Foods that Warm the Body

Adding certain foods to your diet on a daily basis can make a difference in your body temperature. Some of these items may not come as a surprise to you, but others may have you asking yourself if they really do make a difference?

    Nuts & Seeds

Peanuts and almonds are easy to incorporate into a diet. 10 soaked almonds or a handful of peanuts can give the body deep warmth that lasts.

Seeds such as sesame, pumpkin and fennel are great body warmers. Sesame seeds can be incorporated into many dishes, such as green beans or chicken. Pumpkin seeds are great as a snack when roasted. Fennel seeds can also be added to foods. These seeds are great for the digestive system and help to warm the body no matter how you choose to use them.

    Spices & More

Cinnamon, cloves, ginger and pepper are warming spices. Ground cinnamon can be added to add flavor to many of our baked foods. Cinnamon sticks give a wonderful taste to many warm beverages, such as tea.

Cloves are not only warming but they are a great mouth freshener. Because they have antiseptic properties, they not only help with bad breath, but can also keep other parts of your body healthy. Ginger can be added to soups or vegetables to help incorporate this spice into our daily diets.

Pepper just yells out warmth. Sprinkle a little pepper onto your foods in place of the extra salt.

Honey is effective when it comes to warming the body. Honey is a natural sweetener that can be added to just about anything sugar is used in. Honey is also great for the complexion.

Onions and garlic are easy to incorporate into most meals. These little gems not only help in keeping the body warm but can also be helpful in keeping the body healthy. Have a cold? Try a little garlic to open up those stuffy noses. Lowering cholesterol is also one of the benefits of garlic and onions.

    Final Thought

That's it from me for this week. I hope you and your family have a fun-filled but also peaceful week. We're getting back into the swing of things with school, chores and work after enjoying a nice winter break. The next few days we'll be busy trying to stay warm with record low temperatures around here. With a little luck we might even get a few snow flurries.
