[HBHW News] Fall is Here (and Winter Is Coming)

Editorial

Hello ,

Hi there and welcome to the next edition of the HBHW newsletter. Fall is definitely here. I'm sitting in front of my computer wearing my favorite hand-knit cardigan... yes it's finally cool enough to break out the knitwear. I couldn't be happier. I'm sure this cool 60 degree weather won't last, but I'm enjoying it while it's here.

We chatted a little this morning on Facebook about how our cooking changes this time of the year. I'm all about soups, stews and baked dishes like meatloaf now that fall is here. And of course fall means it's football season. I'm enjoying watching games each weekend with my husband. It's a fun, relaxing way to spend time together and I get some knitting in at the same time.

I'm also doing a little spindle spinning (which is an ancient way to make yarn). I'm still fairly new at this craft but it's a lot of fun. I'm working on a scarf for my daughter that I'm hoping to have done by Christmas. The process will involve spinning the yarn and then knitting it up. I'll post some pictures as I get further along.

And speaking of Christmas... it's really not that far away. Are you starting to plan for the Holiday season? If so, take a look at a special home and holiday sale Katie from Paradise Praise is running this week. She asked quite a few of her friends to contribute eBooks and I was happy to share a few. You can take a look at everything she's put together here:

We don't have a lot planned for the rest of week but will probably head out to a small Heritage Festival this weekend. I also need to take my daughter shopping. She's in the school chorus this year and needs a black skirt and white top to wear at performances. She's loving it so far and I can't wait to hear them at their first performance toward the end of October.

"My sorrow, when she's here with me, thinks these dark days of autumn rain are beautiful as days can be; she loves the bare, the withered tree; she walks the sodden pasture lane."

Baked Chicken In Honey Sauce

  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup orange juice concentrate
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon mustard prepared
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon curry powder
  • 1 broiler-fryer chicken (3 to 4 lb.), cut up
  • 1 tablespoon water cold
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch

This recipe makes 6 servings.

Preheat oven to 375 F.

Melt butter or margarine in a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking dish. Add honey, orange juice, lemon juice, mustard, salt and curry powder. Mix well. Coat both sides of chicken pieces with honey mixture and place, skin-side down, in baking dish.

Transfer honey mixture to a small saucepan. In a small bowl or cup, mix cold water and cornstarch until smooth. Pour into honey mixture. Stirring over medium heat, bring to a boil and boil for 1 to 2 minutes.

Drizzle honey sauce over chicken and serve with fluffy hot rice.

Frugal Fun on Facebook

Frugal Tip

How To Clean Your Dishwasher with Vinegar And Baking Soda

You regularly clean your fridge, your oven and even run some vinegar water through your coffee maker... but how often do you clean your dishwasher? If you have an older model like me, you'll notice that your glasses aren't getting quite as shiny and clean and there may even be a bit of a smell to your dishwasher (even after you clean the filter).

There's a quick and easy way to give your dishwasher a deep cleaning and sanitize it. All you need is white vinegar, baking soda and a bit of time.

Start with your empty dish washer. Pour 1 cup of white vinegar in the bottom and run it on a long cycle. If you have a cleaning cycle, use that. Otherwise pick the pots and pans cycle or any other long one that uses plenty of hot water.

How To Clean Your Dishwasher

Once the dishwasher is done running, sprinkle about 1 cup of baking soda in the bottom of your dishwasher. Let it sit overnight. It will absorb any other funky smells. In the morning, do one more quick run without any dishes to clear out the baking soda and you're done.

Pretty easy but very effective.

Five Reasons Why You Need Honey in Your Skin Care Products

My friend Becky from Bee-Queen.com makes the most amazing honey lotion. I have two bottles of it sitting on the counter right now and use them daily. I asked her to share a little bit about the benefits of using honey in your skin care products. Not only does her lotion feel great, it's really good for us as well. I hope you enjoy this guest post.

Honey, the elixir of the Gods. A pure and natural sweetener produced by Honey Bees for thousands of years, desired and consumed by mankind throughout the span of time.

Sounds a bit like magic? Well, in some ways it is. Just the very act of a colony of bees producing this golden elixir is in many ways, magical.

Did you know that in the span of a Honey Bee's lifetime, she will only produce 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey? And that a colony of bees will visit over 2 million trees and flowers and fly over 55,000 miles in order to produce just one pound of honey? Considering the circumference of the earth is about 25,000 miles, it's no wonder the Honey Bee is considered the most industrious insect on the planet.

We all know the benefits of raw honey when taken internally. Raw honey has been touted to alleviate allergy symptoms, GERD (Gastric Reflux Disease) and used in the treatment of ulcers. When broken down, this complex balance of both fructose and sucrose promotes better athletic performance and a restful night's sleep.

Final Thought

That's it from me for this week. I'm getting ready to work for a couple of hours on the "secret" project with Tracy that I hinted at last week. Things are really coming together and I'm hoping to share it with you later this week. It'll be something completely new and a lot of fun. Stay tuned.

Is there anything in particular you'd like to see on the site (or the Facebook Group for that matter) that I'm not doing right now?
