Editorial

Hello ,

Hi there and welcome to the next edition of the HBHW newsletter. I'm happy you are enjoying the new newsletter format. It also makes things easier for me and I'm quickly getting used to this new format. Don't you love it when you come across a win-win like that :)

There isn't a particular theme to this week's edition. Instead, I grabbed some of my favorites. A new crockpot recipe (from my Chicken Crockpot Kindle cookbook), one of my best tips on natural headache remedies and a popular article on breakfast ideas.

The breakfast article sounded like a good thing to share because I didn't have breakfast yet when I picked it for today's edition. Don't worry, I've since fixed a smoothie and am happily sipping away while I'm wrapping this up.

The headache relief ideas will come in handy later this afternoon. We're supposed to have some storms rolling through and they often trigger a headache for me. The peppermint oil usually does the trick when that happens.

That's it from me this week. I have a few chores to do around the house, some gardening left to do and I'm hoping to make some progress this afternoon on the latest HBHW eBook. I can't wait to share it with you. I'll give you a hint... it has to do with cast iron skillets.

Until next week,

35 Simple and Tasty Chicken Crockpot Recipes

I love my crockpot. There are quite a few days when I couldn't put a home-cooked meal together without it. It's so easy and convenient to dump everything in the pot in the morning, turn it on and then go about my day. When dinner time rolls around, the food is ready to eat and after dinner there's only one pot to clean up.

Chicken is perfect for crockpot cooking. Buy it on sale and throw it in your freezer. You can change out different cuts of chicken. For example, if a recipe calls for chicken breast, but thighs are on sale at your grocery store that particular week, feel free to use them instead.

Slow Cooker Reviews

The Hillbilly Housewife Recommends

I'm a big fan of crockpot cooking. No matter how busy I get or how much running around town I've got to do, I know a yummy home-cooked meal will be ready when we get home.

As you know, I've recently written and published a Kindle cookbook of Chicken Crockpot recipes. It's been very well received and I love reading through the emails from happy readers. I noticed that I received quite a few questions about what slow cooker I recommend. I wish I could point you to one product that's perfect for everyone, but in reality the answer is that it depends.

That's why I've reviewed 7 of my favorite slow cookers for you and put those reviews together into a little report that you can download at the link below.

Frugal Tip

Water and Peppermint Oil As Headache Relief

Got a headache? Instead of grabbing that bottle of Aspirin of the shelf, try one of these two headache relief tips first (or even both).

Drink A Glass Of Water

When you first start to feel a headache coming on, start by grabbing a big glass of water. Headaches are often a sign of dehydration and the water will be enough to stop the pain. Give it a try... personally I think the glass of water I'd pour to take my aspirin was often the biggest reason why the headache would go away.

Rub Some Peppermint Oil On Your Temples

Peppermint

If the pain persists after drinking the water, or you're sure you're dealing with a tension or sinus headache, use some peppermint oil and gently rub it on your temples. Be careful that you don't get any in your eyes.

For migraines, I find it also helps to get a wet rag, add a few drops of peppermint oil and lay it over the forehead (preferably while laying down).

Start Your Day With A Healthy Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I'm sure you remember your Mom telling you that when she was trying to get you to eat something before heading to school. The same still holds true today and there is now plenty of scientific evidence that our bodies don't function as well without a good healthy breakfast. Stop skipping this important meal and start your day off right.

You spend six to eight hours sleeping. After that time, your body needs fuel to keep going. Without breakfast at home, your options for on the run nutrition may amount to too much fat, too much sugar and too many carbs. And, that convenient run to the fast food joint is not as convenient and time saving as you think if everyone else has the same idea. The fifteen or twenty minutes spent in line could have been used to fill your belly with something good at home.

Healthy Breakfast

If you are the type to skip breakfast, here is a solution to starting the day with a good breakfast which will help you keep hunger in check as well as give you the natural energy boost to start your day.

Oatmeal:

This food makes a good hot meal that contains lots of filling fiber to keep you from getting hungry later on in the morning. Depending on your taste, you can take five minutes to fix it on the stove or use the microwave for instant oatmeal. Kids tend to like the variety of flavors that come with instant oatmeal. The night before, put together a container of add-ins like blueberries, strawberries and bananas that can be tossed on top for a bit of antioxidant power.

Fruit Smoothies:

These are good any morning but particularly on a hot day. You'll have to blend the ingredients together in the morning, but the prep work can be done at night. Cube your fruit and place it into a container. Instead of frozen yogurt in the morning, use a cup of plain yogurt. Add ice cubes, a little water and blend.
