Never Forget - September 11, 2001
Hello ,

There will be no newsletter today. It just seemed weird to talk about fall soups and the likes on 9/11. I'll share all that with you next week. Instead, let's take a moment to remember that day ...

There are two days in my life that I can remember more vividly than any others. The first is September 11, 2001, the other is the day my daughter was born.

I can still remember what I wore that day and what I was doing when we heard the news that a plane had crashed into the world trade center. We had just flown from Colorado to my In-Laws in South Carolina. One of our cars was at my in-laws house and we were getting it ready to drive it back to Colorado where we were living at the time. We dropped what we were doing and the whole extended family was glued to the TV.

It was horrifying and scary once the second plane hit the tower and it became clear that this was no accident. I remember trying to get in touch with my parents in Germany for hours. I knew they were worried and glad to hear from us the next day.

I spent some time yesterday talking with my daughter about 9/11. To her it is just a history lesson. A date and fact-sheet to remember similar to the 4th of July or D-Day. Sharing what Daddy and I were doing that day and how it felt to watch events play out on live TV made it more real for her. I think it's important that we pass that experience on to our kids.

I invite you to take a moment today to reflect and share your memories of that day 12 years ago with your loved ones.

I also love commemorating important days with food (as you know). I'm baking a simple yellow cake in a rectangular cake pan. Once it's cool, I'll spread some whipped topping on and then use blueberries and strawberries to turn it into a flag cake.
