[HBHW] Take a stroll down memory lane with me

Published: Tue, 08/30/11

Hello ,

I'm sure it comes as no surprise to you that some of my fondest childhood memories take place in the kitchen. I loved helping my mother and grandmother cook and bake all sorts of delicious things and many of the recipes you'll find here at Hillbilly Housewife started out in the family kitchen.

There's just something about good old-fashioned cooking, your mom's meatloaf or your grandma's famous chicken and dumplings.

I'm always on the lookout for great "tried and true" recipes like that. That's why I was very excited when my friend Patti from Remarkable Wrinklies told me a few months ago that she was working on a cookbook filled with recipes like that. I couldn't wait to see it ...

... she finally got it finished and I ordered my copy this morning. It's called Memory Lane Meals ($12) and has over 500 pages "stuffed" with my kind of recipes. Take a look:

As I was looking through the ebook this morning, the humble hash recipe caught my attention. Since I have every ingredient for it in my kitchen, I'm making it for dinner.

Here's the recipe, straight out of Memory Lane Meals:

Humble Hash

3 Tblsp. cooking oil
1 lb. ground beef (or any leftover meat or poultry)
1/2 cup cooked potatoes, diced small
2 cloves garlic, minced or grated
2 small sweet onions, diced
1 small red sweet pepper, diced small
1 (16 oz) can diced tomatoes
1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
2 Tblsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp. chili powder
1/4 tsp. curry powder
1 tsp. salt

Heat oil in large heavy skillet and add next 4 ingredients.  Cook until beef is brown.  If using leftover meat, cook just until everything is hot.
Add the remaining ingredients to the skillet and stir gently until combined.  Cover and slowly simmer for 40 to 50 minutes or until nice and hot and bubbly.  Uncover if the liquid seems to be overtaking the other ingredients.
You can also bake this if you use an oven-ready skillet, like a cast iron skillet.  After browning the meat and adding the veggies and seasoning, just pop it in the oven, covered, for 50 to 60 minutes at 325 degrees.

Remember, this is an ebook - just like any recipe books you order through HillbillyHousewife.com ... this means that you can download the recipes right away and look at them on your computer. Of course you can also print out as many of the recipes as you'd like.

Warmly,
Susanne - The Hillbilly Housewife

P.S. I also love the cute pictures Patti included, including one of herself with a huge homemade birthday cake her mom made for her.

P.P.S. I'm putting the finishing touches on tomorrow's newsletter. Look for it in your email inbox in the morning.
